How Maison De Noir grew from one woman’s quiet reinvention

Some businesses are born out of necessity. Others are born through passionate pursuit. Maison De Noir exists because of both. Owner, Wendy Lien, grew up in Fort McMurray and worked as a heavy equipment operator before a serious back injury led her to re-evaluate her life and career path. After almost a year of being unable to walk and trying to return to work, she left the heavy equipment life to follow her dream of opening a specialized home decor store. “I was sick of people telling me what to do and how I feel. I wanted to take my power back. I love decorating, and I just knew I wanted to do it all day, every day,” Lien recalls.

In July 2025, Lien got her power back and opened Maison De Noir on 124 Street. The store has become a love letter to what she cherishes: eclectic home decor with a strong focus on gathering, hosting, and self-care. Charcoal-coloured walls serve as a backdrop for onyx-hued furnishings and shelves stocked with unique treasures, home goods, and practical items for dinner parties. Fuschia accents mixed with animal prints, disco balls and ochre curtains create an atmosphere that feels playful, unexpected, and full of character. At the heart of the boutique sits a baby grand piano, transformed into a desk and currently dressed with an Amalfi Coast-inspired tablescape. Like the rest of Maison De Noir, the display is ever-changing, shaped by Lien’s natural creativity. Her vision is to fill the boutique with pieces she loves and feels inspired by; items that spark curiosity and conversations.

“I’m finding a lot of people are craving community right now. They want conversation. They want to get together again and make memories and tell stories,” Lien remarks. This realization launched The Table Story, a curated service within Maison De Noir where Lien styles a dining table based on the host’s desired aesthetic, celebration type, and group size. With all set-up and removal taken care of, the service comes complete with a curation of linens layered with runners and napkins, plates, silverware, stemware, flowers, and candles. Not limited to birthdays and Mother’s Day, Lien encourages all types of gatherings. “I want to celebrate those things in life that people may not necessarily celebrate,” she says. “Maybe you ran a marathon, or you wrote a book. You’re getting a divorce or you just moved into your own space. It could be anything.”

The boutique has everything needed to create stunning tablescapes worthy of celebration, as well as thoughtful host gifts, cheeky greeting cards, and even a section dedicated to self care. During her major life changes, Lien found comfort in the things she could control, including intentional skincare and long baths. Those rituals became part of the inspiration for her store, thoughtfully collected and presented in what she calls the Lifestyle Room: a cozy space, filled with skincare and self care tools arranged around a fully decorated claw-foot tub.
