Inside The Woodvale Room, Mill Woods’ candlelit hideaway
Tucked inside The Woodvale Community Facility at Mill Woods Golf Course, The Woodvale Room offers something unexpected: an intimate, candlelit retreat where the outside world seems to fade away.
The restaurant opened in November 2025, born from a desire to transform an underused space into something special. For general manager Padon Brenholen, the vision was about creating an experience as much as serving good food and drinks.
“I’ve always had the philosophy that restaurants have the ability to transport you somewhere else for a few hours and help you escape reality for a little bit,” he says.
That sense of escape begins with the journey in. Nestled along the winding road leading to the golf course, the restaurant is designed to feel like a discovery, a hidden destination waiting to be found. Inside, dark wood tones, warm lighting, and forest-inspired foliage create an intriguing atmosphere.
“We just wanted it to be mysterious, romantic, moody, and intimate,” Brenholen says. Candlelight softens the room, creating pockets of privacy that invite guests to slow down and settle in.
Bringing that vision to life was a hands-on effort. Brenholen and his team took an active role in the transformation, installing the decor and arranging the foliage themselves.
“It was a labour of love for sure,” he says. “The team’s really proud of it.”
The result is a welcoming addition to the Mill Woods neighbourhood, offering a place to enjoy a solo glass of wine, meet someone for dinner, or mark a special occasion. But Brenholen believes the room’s purpose extends beyond celebrations and date nights.
“Maybe you need to reconnect with somebody or just work through something important with them,” he says. “I love that the space kind of allows people to feel like they can do that here.”
The menu follows the same thoughtful philosophy as the surroundings. Rather than overcomplicate familiar dishes, the kitchen celebrates Canadian ingredients, drawing inspiration from the forests, oceans, and prairies. Mushrooms, berries, and other regional ingredients feature alongside recognizable favourites, with seasonal changes keeping the offerings fresh.
The beverage program is equally intentional. Cocktails featuring theatrical touches, including flames and smoke bubbles, add an element of surprise, while the wine list balances familiar favourites with unexpected discoveries. Some selections also reflect the team’s personal passions and community values. Lucy and Sky wines, for example, support animal welfare through a winery donation to the SPCA for every bottle sold.
At The Woodvale Room, the goal is not simply to serve a memorable meal. It is to create a place where people can connect, celebrate, or simply enjoy a few hours away from everyday life. Sometimes, the most memorable destinations are the ones you feel lucky to have discovered.
