The business Mike Klein started in 1989 dabbled in land development and commercial construction before ultimately becoming known as a custom high-end home builder under the name Stellar Homes. While the company still does work in commercial construction, building luxury homes is its main purpose. For Klein, the motivation for working with clients on large-scale projects isn’t solely financial; rather, it’s the chance to create with fewer restraints. 

Stellar Homes’ approach to building is not only to understand what the client needs, but also to help them see how their home can serve their life today and for decades to come. The design team considers future mobility from the outset — most of their houses are built with elevators (or shafts to install elevators in the future), curbless showers, and other accessible features. 

Because each home is completely custom, Stellar Homes builds fewer of them — and each client relationship matters that much more. Satisfied clients sustain the business, with about 90% coming from word of mouth and referrals. For this reason, and out of respect for their clients’ privacy, they don’t actively advertise — which means many of their most impressive projects may never be photographed or shared. 

For Klein, the families who may never be able to afford a custom home are just as important as those who become clients. Giving back to the community, in particular to charities and initiatives that support children, such as food banks and youth sports programs, is essential to their overall mission. Whether they are collecting items for Christmas hampers for the underserved or building a 10,000-square-foot custom estate, the enthusiasm and passion for improving the lives of others at Stellar Homes remains the same.
