A fashionable focus on spirals, sparks and sustainability

Zachary Ward makes clothing that feels alive. Created with passion and purpose, this Edmonton designer’s garments perform as beautifully as they look. The showstoppers on these pages, all from Studio Ward, pay homage to the curious and invigorating properties of nature while keeping sustainability in mind.

Ammonite: A pitch-black velvet bolero with soft, ruffled chiffon inspired by the coiled, spiral shapes found in ammonite fossils. Paired with a slim, knit skirt, the gentle curls add softness to the contrasting pieces and make the ensemble feel elegant and modern.

Rhizoma: A creamy chiffon dress marked with a delicate, black pattern akin to neural sparks, inspired by the intricate sketches of the Spanish neuroscientist, Santiago Ramón y Cajal. The creation is smart, quiet and hauntingly beautiful.

Jasper: Upcycling gets a couture twist. This taupe puffer coat, made from a sleeping bag and a combat jacket, is worn with wide-leg puffer pants. It’s playful, thoughtful and surprisingly chic.

Ward blends curiosity, craft, and imagination across all of his work, resulting in fully enjoyable pieces that you will want to wear with pride.
